Built in Germany in 1991 for the KD Rhine line, the Viking Schumann was acquired by Viking and now travels along European waterways from early spring to late fall at a speed of up to 16 knots.

It is 311 ft long and 36 ft wide; its officers and crew are mostly German; and its passengers are mainly English speakers. The ship and its sister, Viking Fontane, were designed to slide under low bridges with a shallow draft.
