'Gran' treatment for Sol Melia Cancun resort

CANCUN, Mexico -- You could say that the Melia Cancun Convention Center Beach & Spa Resort here is getting the gran treatment.

Sol Melia said it will spend $32 million to upgrade the 680-room hotel to its luxury Gran Melia brand, effective Sept. 15.

One wing of the hotel with 132 rooms will offer the brand's Royal Service, which includes dedicated check-in/check-out, butler service, concierge, breakfast and nightly cocktails served in a private lounge, and upgraded amenities.

After the upgrade, the Gran Melia Cancun will be the 10th Gran Melia hotel worldwide, the fourth in Latin America and the second in Mexico, joining the Gran Melia Reforma in Mexico City.

The hotel features the largest indoor garden atrium in the Caribbean, spa with outdoor spa treatment cabanas, fitness center, five restaurants, a nine-hole golf course and 31,000 square feet of meeting space.
