'Survivor' plan not what it seems

LAS CROABAS, Puerto Rico -- Responding to heightened interest in adventure travel, Wyndham El Conquistador Resort & Country Club here created a Survivor in Paradise package that bears no resemblance to a television program of a similar name.

For example, Wyndham's package throws in hot stone therapy massages and champagne lunches after each challenge.

In contrast, participants on the television show either got booted off the location or suffered through a monsoon, drought or a dinner of fire ants.

El Conquistador's private Palomino Island is the site of several activities on the Survivor in Paradise package, available through December. The resort's program, available through December, combines adventurous activities with gourmet meals and spa services at its Golden Door Spa.

Components of the package that include daily buffet breakfast and roundtrip transfers are:

  • Guided hikes through El Yunque Rain Forest, known for its 50 varieties of orchids, 150 varieties of ferns, millions of tree frogs, tropical birds and 26 animal species found only in Puerto Rico.
  • Catamaran sunset sail and picnic.
  • Morning power hikes on the nature trails of Palomino Island, the resort's exclusive retreat that is reached by ferry from El Conquistador's marina.
  • A choice of two spa treatments at the Golden Door, including a massage, facial or body polish.
  • An evening kayak trip on Phosphorescent Bay.
  • Survivor package participants will hike the trails of El Yunque Rain Forest, one of the components of the program. The Visitors Center at El Yunque, above, offers informative brochures, slides and exhibits. Many hiking trails start at the Center. Per person, double rates through Dec. 19 start low and increase as the resort stay shortens.

Rates are $235 per night for seven nights, $245 for five nights and $272 for three nights, including tax and tariffs.

Facilities at El Conquistador include 12 restaurants; an 18-hole golf course; seven lighted tennis courts; an interconnected pool complex with a water slide, and a 13,000-square-foot casino.

Activities ranging from deep-sea fishing to horseback riding on the beach can be arranged.

The Golden Door Spa features 24 treatment rooms, a movement studio, a juice bar, fitness classes and a tea room.
