ASTA survey finds Vegas tops among U.S. spots

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Travel agents said they are booking more trips to Las Vegas this winter than to any other U.S. destination, according to a survey by ASTA and Fodor's Travel Publications.

The annual Winter Hot Spots contained only modest changes from last year, but it might indicate one recent international travel trend.

"With a few exceptions, Americans are staying closer to home this winter, preferring to travel to nearby Mexico and the Caribbean," said Richard Copland, ASTA's president and chief executive officer.

For domestic bookings, Las Vegas edged out Orlando as the most popular destination. Last winter, Orlando ranked first and Las Vegas second.

Hawaii ranked third this winter, followed by New York. Phoenix, which jumped to third last winter, dropped back to fifth this year.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Los Angeles; Miami; Denver; Fort Myers, Fla., and New Orleans and San Francisco, which tied for 10th.

Internationally, this winter's rankings look a lot like last year's.

London is still the most popular destination, and the rest of the top five also are the same -- Cancun, Mexico; Paris; Rome, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Also back from last year are Sydney, Australia; Aruba; Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Nassau, Bahamas.

But there is a newcomer to the international Top 10. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, jumped from 15th to ninth place.
