ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Travel agents said they are booking more trips
to Las Vegas this winter than to any other U.S. destination,
according to a survey by ASTA and Fodor's Travel Publications.
The annual Winter Hot Spots contained only modest changes from
last year, but it might indicate one recent international travel
"With a few exceptions, Americans are staying closer to home
this winter, preferring to travel to nearby Mexico and the
Caribbean," said Richard Copland, ASTA's president and chief
For domestic bookings, Las Vegas edged out Orlando as the most
popular destination. Last winter, Orlando ranked first and Las
Hawaii ranked third this winter, followed by New York. Phoenix,
which jumped to third last winter, dropped back to fifth this
Rounding out the Top 10 were Los Angeles; Miami; Denver; Fort
Myers, Fla., and New Orleans and San Francisco, which tied for
Internationally, this winter's rankings look a lot like last

Also back from last year are Sydney, Australia; Aruba; Montego

But there is a newcomer to the international Top 10. Cabo San
Lucas, Mexico, jumped from 15th to ninth place.
