Acadia Tours spices up stays

Agents can spice up a client's stay in Louisiana with help from Acadia Tours, a receptive operator in Crowley that focuses on the state's Cajun country.

"I sold my retail business of 25 years and did not want to retire," said Alice Whiting, who founded the company in 1997.

"I have always enjoyed meeting people and sharing the culture, customs and food of this special area of Louisiana."

Whiting has a series of programs that explore the agriculture, history, art and music of this region.

She also arranges and escorts all of the tours.

The tours, which are commissionable to agents at 10%, can be customized for individuals and groups.

Special group rates and charter bus information are available, and tours can be combined, Whiting said.

One of the firm's most popular itineraries, she said, is an Agriculture Tour in which guests visits a working farm.

Participants learn about rice, soybean and crawfish farming and view antique farm equipment. A Cajun meal can be arranged.

Sample prices for this tour are $23.50 per person for groups of 25 or more.

Swamp tours and cultural tours are among the firm's other offerings.

Groups rates vary according to the attraction and tour selected, Whiting said.

For individuals and small groups, generally the price is $20 per hour for a minimum of five hours.

The company can accommodate up to 90 people at a time on a tour.

The firm is a member of the Acadia Parish Tourist Commission, Lafayette Convention and Visitor Commission and Louisiana Travel and Promotion Association.
