BANGKOK -- Paris-based Accor said it was tapped to manage its
second hotel here, the 454-room Monarch Lee Gardens Hotel.
The announcement comes four months after Accor was picked to
operate its first Bangkok property, the former Central Grand Plaza,
which it relaunched as the Sofitel Central Plaza Bangkok on March
Accor, which assumed management of the Monarch last month, plans
to oversee a $6.5 million upgrade and renovation of the hotel
starting this month.
The renovation is scheduled to be completed early next year, at
which time the hotel will be operated under Accor's luxury Sofitel
brand and relaunched as the Sofitel Silom Bangkok.
Jochen Dobel, Accor's deputy chairman, Asia-Pacific, said the
Sofitel Silom Bangkok will help attract more international business
travel to the Thai capital.
"The two Sofitels in Bangkok will each have unique positioning
that will appeal to different market segments," Dobel said.
"Sofitel Central Plaza is extremely strong with domestic
corporate and government accounts in the surrounding area."
The Monarch Lee is located on Silom Road in the heart of the
capital's financial district.
As part of the renovation blueprint, 12 floors -- from the 22nd
to the 34th with a total of 250 rooms -- will be converted to
executive floors catering to corporate travelers.
Each room will be equipped with modern conveniences for business
travelers, including dual-line phones with voice mail and
dataports, and large work desks with ergonomic chairs.
A Sofitel Club Lounge will cater to business travelers with
dedicated check-in/out service, daily breakfast and a complimentary
cocktail hour every evening.
In addition, conference and meeting facilities will be added to
the 36th floor, existing food and beverage outlets will receive a
face-lift and the lobby and public areas will be redesigned to
reflect Sofitel's five-star positioning.
Accor said the hotel will remain open for business during the
