Alaska operator conducts Eklutna Glacier trips

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The Chugach National Forest and the blue ice of the Eklutna Glacier are featured on the one-day and half-day excursions offered by a local company, Buffalo Mackey ATV and Custom Tours.

The program starts at Bird Creek, about 40 miles south of Anchorage, with a ride into the forest to view the abundant wildlife -- eagles, moose, Dall sheep and, in the streams during the right season, salmon.

Getting to the glacier requires only a gentle, three-quarter-mile walk through the trees.

Beverages and snacks are included as well as safety helmets, where required, and rain gear.

Prices start at $115 for those with transportation to the trail head at Bird Creek, $125 for those who need Buffalo Mackey to pick them up in downtown Anchorage.

Transportation is in four-wheel-drive, all-terrain vehicles.

The program starts in mid-May and runs through the summer.
