ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The Chugach National Forest and the blue ice
of the Eklutna Glacier are featured on the one-day and half-day
excursions offered by a local company, Buffalo Mackey ATV and
The program starts at Bird Creek, about 40 miles south of
Anchorage, with a ride into the forest to view the abundant
wildlife -- eagles, moose, Dall sheep and, in the streams during
the right season, salmon.
Getting to the glacier requires only a gentle,
three-quarter-mile walk through the trees.
Beverages and snacks are included as well as safety helmets,
where required, and rain gear.
Prices start at $115 for those with transportation to the trail
head at Bird Creek, $125 for those who need Buffalo Mackey to pick
them up in downtown Anchorage.
Transportation is in four-wheel-drive, all-terrain vehicles.
The program starts in mid-May and runs through the summer.
