Alaska Airlines is upping service to Hawaii. The carrier launched daily, year-round flights from Seattle to Kahului, on Maui, in July and will begin scheduled, year-round service from Seattle to Kona, on the Big Island, on Nov. 17.
Meanwhile, thrice-weekly, seasonal service between Anchorage and Maui will run from Oct. 31 through April 25.
Alaska's Kahului flight is operated with Boeing 737-800 aircraft, accommodating 16 passengers in first class and 141 in the main cabin. Go to www.alaskaair.com.
Go charges for bags
Hawaii interisland airline Go will charge passengers $10 for the first checked bag starting Aug. 10. In tandem, Go reduced the second-checked-bag fee it debuted in June from $25 to $17, matching Hawaiian Airlines on interisland routes.
Corporate customers and passengers flying on government fares, or on the same reservation as an exempt customer (except for group bookings of eight or more), do not have to pay the fee. Exempt items are child car seats, carriers and strollers and wheelchairs, walkers and other assistive devices. For more, see www.iflygo.com.
Millions for Maalaea
Maalaea Harbor on Maui will undergo a multimillion-dollar makeover. The harbor, home to several diving, snorkeling and whale-watching operators, will have decades-old piers and roadways rebuilt, a new ferry terminal building, sewage pump-out stations, electrical upgrades, renovated loading docks and upgraded drainage.
Hawaii's share of the bill is $10.9 million; the Federal Transit Administration will provide another $18.6 million. Construction is due to be completed in 2011.
Maalaea and Lahaina harbors are the only marinas on Maui where private boat owners can tie up to slips.
