Amelia Tours outlines Malta program

HICKSVILLE, N.Y. -- Amelia Tours' 1999 roster of Malta programs emphasize variety, with three- to seven-night all-Malta stays as well as Malta Plus vacations that add Sicily, Cyprus or Tunisia.

Based at a choice of first class hotels, the Kennedy Nova or Lapsi, or deluxe hotels, the Westin or Phoenicia in Valletta, travelers have five different excursions included in the seven-night vacation.

Included is a half-day walking tour of Valletta, whose highlights are the Auberge de Castile, which offers examples of 18th century Baroque architecture and St. John's Cathedral and Museum, housing priceless art treasures and the multimedia show, "Malta Experience."

Another excursion takes visitors to the historic walled city of Mdina, with such sites as the Plazzo Vilhena and the Baroque cathedral, and to Rabat to see the Roman Villa and Museum, as well as the catacombs of St. Paul.

On another day, an excursion is made by ferry to Malta's sister island of Gozo, visiting the prehistoric temples of Ggantija, Zaghra grottos, Calyspo's cave and the island capital of Vittoria.

Other package features include seven breakfats, seven dinners, services of a local host (including airport assistance and transfers), hotel taxes and service charges; additional optional sightseeing is available.

Using first class hotels, the per-person, double, cost is $789; using the deluxe Westin, the price is $1,067 per person and staying at the Phoenicia, the cost per person is $1,465.

When combining Malta with other destinations, the basic program includes first class hotels, two or more meals a day, locally hosted sightseeing, air transportation between Malta and the second destination, airport transfers and local taxes and service charges.

A 13-night Malta Plus Sicily program features six nights in Malta with daily sightseeing, and seven nights in Sicily, with overnights in Catania, Messina, Palermo and Siracusa, plus sightseeing in Taromina, Monreale, Agrigento and other historic sites; the per person, double occupancy cost is $1,798.

Malta can be combined with Taormina, Sicily's lovely resort city, with four days in Malta and three nights in Taromina for $1,247 per person.

Weekly departures are available on the program mixing Malta for six nights with Cyprus for seven nights.

In Cyprus, travelers stay in Limassol and take daily excursions to such attrations as Larnaca, Nicosia and Lefkara, the crusader castle of Kolossi, the Greco-Roman theater at Curium, Paphos, the Troodos Mountains and the Kykko monastery.

The cost per person double is $1,748.
