Amtrak Plans to Buy 21 Locomotives for $46 Million

WASHINGTON -- Amtrak said it plans to buy 21 new diesel locomotives from the Electro Motive Division of General Motors based in LaGrange, Ill., and London, Ontario, for about $46 million.

The locomotives, to be delivered next spring, will be assigned to the Amtrak West business unit and will operate on the San Diegans, Capitols and San Joaquins trains as well as on the Pacific Northwest Corridor. More than 7.3 million people traveled on Amtrak trains in the West last year, Amtrak said.
