Auberge builds $65M Cabo San Lucas resort

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico -- Auberge Resorts, an operator of luxury hotels based in Mill Valley, Calif., is in the process of building a mixed-use tourism development here.

The 17-acre resort, called Esperanza, will comprise a 50-room, all-suite hotel with a spa; six additional freestanding hotel villas and two restaurants as well as 80 privately owned, oceanview villas called the Residence Club.

According to a company spokesman, the entire project will cost about $65 million.

He said the resort will be located on the bluffs of Punta Ballena overlooking the Sea of Cortes and its oft-photographed archlike rock formation.

The resort will be a 10-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas and 20 minutes from the colonial town of San Jose del Cabo.

All of the villas are scheduled to open in June.

One model villa is complete and available for viewing.

The 50-room hotel and spa, the two restaurants and a bar are scheduled to open next January in time for the busy winter season.

The hotel rooms and suites will be commissionable to agents and will feature original artwork, custom-designed furniture and personal touches, such as complimentary fresh fruit and tapas, said the spokesman.

Rates at the hotel will start at $550 per night, double, and jump to $6,000 per night for a three-bedroom suite that will measure close to 4,000 square feet.

The 80 villas are for sale to private owners and corporations and will not be rentable to individual visitors, according to the spokesman.

However, the hotel villas will be designated separately so they can be rented out by their owners, the spokesman added.

A concierge service will arrange excursions for guests ranging from golf outings at any of the nearby championship golf courses to scuba diving and fishing expeditions.

Other hotel amenities and facilities will include four swimming pools, two private beaches, a tennis complex, boutiques and an on-site market and cafe selling specialty foods.

Esperanza will be the fifth property in Auberge Resorts' portfolio.

The other properties are the Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley, Calif.; San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, Calif.; the Lodge at Skylonda in Woodside, Calif., and El Dorado Hotel in Sonoma, Calif.
