Bay Area Touts Summer Attractions

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco and its surrounding area offer a variety of new attractions this summer.

The Oakland Zoo opened a new African Savanna in March, with 10 new exhibits and 143 new animal species -- the largest expansion in the zoo's history.

Pier 39 and the Blue and Gold Fleet now offer tours of Alcatraz, in San Francisco Bay, after dark. If you thought "the Rock" was scary by day, take a look at it by night.

Fans of John Steinbeck will not want to miss the 37,000-square-foot National Steinbeck Center in Old Town Salinas, near Steinbeck's beloved Cannery Row, due to open in June.

Three new rides are featured at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, on a mile of beachfront.

The operators of all of those additions -- and many more -- are members of a promotional group known as the San Francisco Bay Area Vacation Council, which comprises convention bureaus, attractions and transportation companies.
