NEW ORLEANS -- This city is getting ready for the new millennium in many ways, and one of them is by increasing its hotel room inventory.

Among construction projects on schedule or nearing completion are:

  • The Ritz-Carlton New Orleans, rising on Canal Street, and the Iberville Suites on Iberville Street are nearing completion. "We are on schedule and expect to open the Ritz-Carlton in mid-February [Valentine's Day] and the Iberville Suites within 45 days," said Scott Russell, director of sales and marketing for the properties.
  • Combined, the properties will add more than 650 rooms to the city: 452 at the Ritz-Carlton and 235 at Iberville Suites.

  • A Hampton Inn & Suites has been able to push its opening date forward, from September to May of next year. The property, located at the New Orleans Convention Center, will boast 288 rooms.
  • The Jockey Club, which was to open next spring, has met with construction delays, according to Larry Garfinkel, a managing partner in the project, and has now set a debut for the end of next year but no later than the first quarter of 2001.
