KRALENDIJK, Bonaire -- Diving will continue at Town Pier (North Pier) here, despite new security regulations that took effect July 1 as part of the new International Ship and Port Security Code for ports and piers around the world.

According to a spokesman for Bonaire's harbormaster's office, Bonaire's divemasters now have to register for permission to lead guided dives beneath the pier; divers must provide identification; and approval to dive the site must be received in advance of the dive.

Security officers, already in place along the waterfront, now check dive groups into the water. When there is a ship at the pier or when port security is tightened, diving is prohibited.
