British Colonial Hilton ready to ring in 2000

NASSAU -- The British Colonial Hilton, which will make its debut this summer, will kick off the new year with two millennium celebrations. The first entitles guests to take over the first six floors of the property (284 rooms) for three nights. The cost: $1,000,999; the commission: 10%.

Guests will have the run of the house starting at check-in on Dec. 30. Package components are two rounds of golf; massages; water sports, including scuba diving and snorkeling, and other activities.

The next day, the British Colonial Hilton will host a black-tie New Millennium's Eve Gala. The festivities will take place in the hotel's grand ballroom as well as in all of its restaurants and lounges. New Year's Day will be considered a time for rest and recovery. The hotel will host a brunch where hangover remedies will be served.

At night, a Bahamian-style cookout will be held featuring conch and grouper as well as the island's signature drinks -- Bahama-Mamas and Goombay Smashes. The second plan offers 12 guests the top floor, including the prime minister's penthouse, for seven nights. The cost: $99,999; the commission: 10%.

Highlights during the weeklong celebration include two fishing trips (one deep-sea and one nighttime excursion), two rounds of golf for 12 at the South Ocean Club, three cars at the guests' disposal and a Bahamian show with dinner and drinks.

Other elements include scuba diving and snorkeling excursions, an airplane tour of the islands and a daylong party at a private island. Guests also will have two dedicated staff members at their disposal around-the-clock.

The plan is valid from Dec. 26 to Jan. 2, and the British Colonial Hilton is offering discount rates for guests who want to extend their stay. Both packages include the gala, food and beverages, activities and gratuities.

The British Colonial Hilton, located in downtown Nassau, is scheduled to open Aug. 1. The property will offer a private beach, a swimming pool, a fitness center and an on-site scuba diving and snorkeling facility.

Dining venues at the hotel are Portofino, an Italian restaurant; the Wedgwood, serving grilled meats and fish, and the Patio Grill, an outdoor eatery with Bahamian- and American-style snacks. To celebrate its opening, the resort set a weekend deal from Aug. 6 to Dec. 23. Rates start at $149 per night, double, and include breakfast.
