Broadway continues to make inroads on the Strip

LAS VEGAS -- "Chicago -The Musical" began an indefinite run Aug. 24 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, furthering a trend toward Broadway's presence on the Strip.

In other theater developments, Steve Wynn is building a 1,500-seat theater at The Mirage to launch an original musical called "Miss Spectacular." And the international musical "Notre Dame de Paris" will make its U.S. debut next January at the Paris-Las Vegas hotel-casino. In addition, the Broadway musical "Cats" is playing Sept. 7 to 12 at the MGM Grand hotel-casino on the Strip. Hotel and entertainment packages are available.

"Chicago -- the Musical" stars Jasmine Guy, who returns to the role she originated in the first national tour of the play. Guy is perhaps best known for her starring role as Whitley Gilbert on the NBC television series "A Different World." She has also appeared on television programs such as "NYPD Blue" and "Touched by an Angel."

Her co-star, Charlotte d'Amboise, has received numerous accolades for her theater roles, including the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award.

Tickets for "Cats" are available through any local Ticketmaster; in Las Vegas, phone (702) 474-4000.
