CDC cancels D.R. malaria alert

ATLANTA -- The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention canceled its recommendation, made in December, that U.S. travelers headed for the Dominican Republic's Altagracia province and its Bavaro Beach resort area take chloroquine to ward off malaria.

The malaria outbreak is over in that area, the CDC and Dominican Republic Ministry of Health officials said. However, travelers to rural areas outside the resorts should take the chloroquine, they said.
