California's Ojai Valley Inn Breaks Ground on Spa Project

OJAI, Calif. -- The Ojai Valley Inn, located in central California about 75 miles north of Los Angeles, broke ground on a 31,000-square-foot spa slated to open by year's end.

The inn is a 220-acre landmark mountain resort in the Ojai Valley, a region known as a haven for artists, writers and celebrities.

Located 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the inn features 207 rooms and suites in eight buildings, all decorated in a California Spanish Revival style.

Thad Hyland, general manager of the Ojai Valley and Spa Ojai, said the decision to construct the spa was based on extensive market research.

"The aging of the American population brings baby boomers into the second half of their lives. Many are eager for balance and centering, and want to design their own lifestyle plan.

"Spa Ojai will meet this demand, [and] its emphasis will be on achieving personal well-being and renewal," he said.

Spa consultant Sylvia Sepielli is helping design the spa's program and arrange staffing.

"Spa Ojai will provide guests with an unusual variety of therapies, programs and amenities," she said, "in addition to exceptional service and the inn's signature California Coastal Harvest cooking, all in the beautiful surroundings of this mystical valley."

The original inhabitants of the Ojai Valley were Chumash Indians, who are said to have revered it as a place of healing.

Workshops at the spa will emphasize stress elimination, healthy cooking, yoga and financial well being.

Many of the massage rooms are being designed with fireplaces; a couples massage room will have a fireplace and private terrace with whirlpool.

The spa will have 31 guest rooms, including a top-floor penthouse suite, a meditation loft and sunrise and sunset terraces.

Activities will include tai chi classes, organic gardening, hiking and mountain biking.

In keeping with the design of the inn, the spa facility will evoke a Spanish village ambience, Hyland said.

The inn offers three restaurants and a bar; a conference center and ballroom; an 18-hole golf course; tennis courts, and horseback riding at the on-site ranch and stables.

A range of spa packages will be introduced. Currently, overnight plans at the inn include:

* A Bed-and-Breakfast package starting at $197 per person.

* A Tennis package, from $257, per person.

* A Classic Golf plan, from $303.

* A Pampering package, from $303.

* A Best of Ojai plan, from $285.

All rates are based on double occupancy.

Packages require a two-night stay and include taxes.

Standard room rates start at $195 per person, double.

A children's program, Camp Ojai, is offered, and provides supervised arts and recreational activities.
