Caravan is bound for Acadian fest

LAFAYETTE -- What started as a personal itinerary from Canada to Louisiana has turned into a 12-day Caravane Pelagie 99, or pilgrimage, heading to the Congres Mondial Acadien-Louisiane 1999 in Houma.

It has been organized by Jean Gaudet of Dieppe, New Brunswick. "As I told friends about my trip, they asked if they could come along. A caravan was born," he said.

Composed of travelers who will either leave from Memramcook, New Brunswick, or join along the way, this pilgrimage will visit important sites in Acadian history. Caravane Pelagie 99 will leave Memramcook on July 18 at noon. It will arrive in Louisiana on July 30, where an official welcoming committee will be waiting.

Caravane Pelagie 99 will continue on to Lafayette that same day, two days before Congres Mondial Acadien-Louisiane 1999's opening ceremonies in Houma. The main goal of the pilgrimage is to foster understanding of the history of the Acadians exiled in the U.S.
