Carmel courts canine guests

CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. -- Located 120 miles south of San Francisco, this seaside town has rolled out the red carpet for dogs, with many hotels, restaurants, shops and galleries welcoming canine companions.

The 38-room Cypress Inn provides doggie blankets, beds and bowls.

Evening turndown service includes chocolate (for humans) and biscuits (for dogs).

A pet-sitter also can be arranged.

Other area hotels that welcome canines are: the Carmel Country Inn, Carmel Trade-winds Inn, Wayside Inn, Lamp Lighter Inn, Lincoln Green Inn, Casa de Carmel, Coachman's Inn, Vagabond's House Inn, Forest Lodge and Hofsas House.

The Forge in the Forest is one of several dog-friendly restaurants, with menu items such as Hot Diggity Dog, Quarter Hounder or a bowl of kibble.

At the Porta Bella, pets can drink their water from a champagne bucket.

Cassanova, Grasings, Anton & Michel Restaurant and Le Coq D'or are additional restaurants that cater to dog lovers.

Carmel Beach allows visitors to walk their dogs unleashed, and more than 50 shops at the Carmel Plaza offer dog treats and fresh water to four-legged friends.
