Children's program in place at Outrigger resorts

HONOLULU -- Outrigger Hotels & Resorts started a children's program for guests at its 20 Waikiki properties.

Based at Outrigger Reef on the Beach, the program is for children age 5 and up and is held Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Transportation to and from the hotel from other properties is available.

Activities range from Hawaiian arts and crafts and games to excursions to Waikiki attractions.

Called Malama Na Keiki (care for the children), the program costs $30 per child per day, with lunch and a snack included (vegetarian lunches are available on request).

Half-day sessions cost $20.

The morning session, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., includes lunch. The afternoon session, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., includes a snack.

For younger children, Outrigger provides each child with a book that is part of a series of four called Keiki's First Books, which teaches Hawaiian words.

A child participating each day for four days gets all four.

The activities, which require advance reservations, are:

  • Mondays, Hawaiian arts and crafts and legends (mornings) and the Honolulu Zoo and pool activities (afternoons).
  • Tuesdays, kite making and flying, an outrigger canoe ride and a pool swim.
  • Wednesdays, the Kodak Hula Show, snorkeling and a pool swimming.
  • Thursdays, shoreline fishing, boogie boarding and sand-castle making.
  • Fridays, lei making, hula lessons, the Waikiki Aquarium and a pool swim.
