Crown Blue to test Venice waters

NEW YORK -- Crown Blue Line, which rents self-skippered small boats in Europe, is testing Italy as its newest destination this year.

The company will begin a limited rental operation in Chioggia, located south of Venice, for floating vacations in and around the Venice lagoon.

The sailing season will run from April through early October, with prices varying by departure date.

A weekly rental of an eight-passenger vessel at Chioggia, including tax, fuel, canal tolls and damage waiver, ranges from $3,010 in April and late September to $4,170 in July and the first half of August.

Crown Blue Line also added a new operation in Laggan, Scotland, this year giving customers access to Loch Ness.

That brings the company's total European presence to six countries, including Germany; Ireland; the Netherlands, and France, its biggest market.

The firm added two more rental bases in France this year as well -- one at Daon, on the River Mayenne, and one in Briarie, in the Loire region.

The boats in Crown Blue Line's fleet can accommodate from two to 10 passengers; cabins have double beds or convertible double beds, bathrooms, kitchens and sun decks.

All rates are commissionable. Crown Blue Line's 2000 brochures are available from its U.S. office.
