Cruises ply South America waters, tip of Antarctica

NEW YORK -- Two international cruise lines have announced special sailings in South American waters this fall.

Clipper Cruise Line will offer two one-week cruises in November, exploring the Beagle Channel and Chilean fjords aboard the 122-passenger Clipper Adventurer prior to the ship's full season in Antarctica.

The two cruises, departing Nov. 15 and 22, sail between Ushuaia, Argentina, and Puerto Montt, Chile, exploring the Beagle Channel, Puerto Natales, Torres del Paine National Park, Seno Eyre (for Pius XI glacier), Puerto Eden, Canal Mesier and the English Narrows.

Prior to joining the cruise in Ushuaia on the Nov. 15 departure, passengers will stay overnight in Buenos Aires at the Sheraton Hotel and will spend the final night in Santiago at the Hyatt Regency, after disembarking in Puerto Montt.

The itinerary is reversed on the Nov. 22 sailing, and both capital stays include half-day sightseeing tours.

On-board experts in the region's natural history and culture accompany the cruises, and the ship's fleet of Zodiac landing craft enables passengers to go ashore to small towns and explore remote areas.

In conjunction with the cruises, passengers may join a five-night optional extension to Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Rates for the land-cruise program start at $4,950 per person, double, and $6,840, single. Costs include roundtrip air from Miami, the one-week cruise, tours and overnights in Buenos Aires and Santiago.

Air transportation, hotels and sightseeing are included in the five-night extension to Cusco and Machu Picchu, priced at $1,890 per person, double, and $2,330, single.

Marine Expeditions is offering Shackleton's Heroic Story, a 23-day expedition in Antarctica that examines the route and visits key sites of Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1915 epic adventure.

Guests aboard the 53-passenger Marine Spirit will visit Elephant Island, the first dry land Shackleton's crew reached after 497 days at sea; the South Orkneys; South Georgia, and Antarctica.

Naturalists and historians on board will focus on Shackleton and his crew's 22-month struggle for survival, and guest lecturer, Jonathan Shackleton, will share personal stories of his cousin's feat of endurance.

The expedition departs from the U.S. on Dec. 7. The cost, starting at $5,595, includes roundtrip air from New York or Miami; two nights' hotel accommodations in Buenos Aires, and the cruise plus shore excursions.

Clients departing from Los Angeles must add $286 per person to cover supplemental air.
