Czech Republic holds off hiking VAT rate on accommodations

PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Czech authorities postponed a planned hike in value-added tax on accommodations in the wake of an industry outcry.

The proposed tax rate rise -- from today's 5% to 19%, much closer to European Union norms -- had been set for Jan. 1, but now won't be implemented until at least 2006, according to tourism officials.
