Daufuskie Island Resort plays on 'Survivor' theme

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. -- The Daufuskie Island Resort here launched an Executive Survivor Challenge plan aimed at groups of 25 or more.

The idea derived from the popular television show "Survivor."

"Like the rest of the world, we were captivated by the whole 'survivor' concept, and the more we watched, the more we saw it as the ultimate team-building experience," said Jack Bickart, vice president of sales for the 186-room Daufuskie Island Resort.

The commissionable Executive Survivor Challenge is available from one to three days.

It begins with an evening orientation at which teams are signed in, outfitted with a survivor equipment pack (which consists of a T-shirt, a hat and a knapsack with assorted materials) and given the rules of the competition.

The next day, teams are pitted against each other in various challenges, such as boat-making, a treasure hunt or a crab-capturing race.

Points are accumulated and all but two teams are eliminated. The losing teams pick the winner.

The event concludes with a cocktail reception and a beachside oyster roast and lobster boil.

Touches borrowed from the TV show include bonfires, tribal councils and torch snuffings (as teams are defeated).

"Our unique island setting gives us a great start to re-create the feel of the show, and our activities staff has created an outstanding series of events," Bickart said.

The competition is overseen by the Daufuskie Island Resort recreation staff, and it can be customized for individual groups.

The Daufuskie staff is being careful to remain flexible so it will be able to add to the program based on what a group wants, said Martha Heagany, the property's vice president of marketing.

The Survivor Executive Challenge is priced per event. The minimum is $90 per person for three events.

Additional events can be added for $30 per person, per event.

The fee includes staff for the event and the survivor equipment pack.

Accommodations, food and beverages are at an additional group rate.
