Daytona hopes events fuel strong Oct.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.--Visitor interests here hope to recoup this month some of the losses incurred when wildfires forced the July 4 cancellation of the Pepsi 400 Nascar Winston Cup stock car race.

According to Sharon Mock, executive director of the Daytona Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Pepsi 400 was rescheduled for the evening of Oct. 17, and hotel room availability for that period is tight.

Another event always held in October is Biketoberfest, set for Oct. 22 to 25. It focuses on motorcycle races and related activities. There are very few rooms left in town during that event, Mock reported.

The Pepsi 400 is expected to return to its early July date in 1999, she said.
