Delta Vacations launches tours to region with 12% pay

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Delta Vacations introduced its first vacation packages to Central and South America. The program features Costa Rica, Panama, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Venezuela.

As a sales incentive to agents, Delta Vacations is paying a 12% commission on all independent, escorted and adventure-travel programs. In addition, Delta Vacations is offering 2,500 bonus Delta SkyMiles for bookings of air-inclusive packages for travel completed by March l.

Central and South America programs feature hiking and snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands, bird- and butterfly- watching in Costa Rica, cruising down the Amazon River in Brazil or jungle camping near the tallest waterfall on Earth, Angel Falls.

A sample of the natural wonders category offered by Delta Vacations is the nine-day Jungle Wildlife of Peru escorted package, which starts at $1,709 per person with air from Atlanta.

After a two-day stay in Lima, tour members fly to Puerto Maldonado to start a canoe trip along the Tambopata River to the 1.7 million-acre Tambopata National Park. Accommodations for three nights are at the park's Research Center.

During the jungle stay, there is ample time to view the abundant wildlife: macaws, capuchin monkeys, cormorants, storks and caimans are spotted easily. For travelers seeking adventure vacations, the program offers biking, white-water river rafting, horseback riding through the rain forest, mountain hiking and camping.

For example, the two-week Coast to Coast Across Costa Rica package -- priced at $2,099 per person, double, with air from Atlanta -- challenges travelers to journey across the country from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea without using motorized vehicles.

Instead, travelers hike up mountains and walk through the rain forest and along beautiful valleys. Mountain biking up and over the Continental Divide and white-water rafting are also part of the plan.

In addition, a six-night Best Buy Costa Rica package offering optional adventure-themed excursions is available from $849 per person, with air from Atlanta. Under programs that feature cultural attractions, Delta Vacations offers an 11-night Cultures of Brazil package.

The program includes an evening tour and folklore show in Salvador de Bahia plus visits to two Unesco World Heritage sites, Ouro Preto and Paraty. The tour spends three nights in Rio, where the itinerary includes a city tour, a Sepetiba Bay cruise and a samba show.

The tour price starts at $2,899 per person, double occupancy, with air from Atlanta.
