Deluxe stays on the hilltop over Toledo

TOLEDO, Spain -- For those planning to stay overnight here, there are quaint lodgings in the old town, but the most deluxe properties are three hotels that offer a magnificent view from a hilltop overlooking the city.

The grand dame of the these is the 76-room Parador of Toledo.

Along with a veranda offering sensational views, there are grand staircases, antiques and dramatic chandeliers, all appropriate for this palace hotel.

Service can be on the stiff to condescending side, but surrounded by 16th century mahogany, nobody seems to notice. Rates start at $89, double.

On the other end of the spectrum is the modern 50-room Hotel Domenico, which has no Old World charm but provides the welcoming atmosphere that befits a family-run establishment. Rates start at $93, double.

For a country inn with a chic decor, there's the swank yet friendly 49-room A/C Toledo. Rates start at $163, double.
