Desert Pines Club an Affordable Golf Destination Near Strip

LAS VEGAS -- Golf enthusiasts heading to Las Vegas can take advantage of another option in this destination's list of upscale courses: Desert Pines Golf Club.

The $20 million facility, located east of the city off Interstate 95, opened for public play at the end of December.

Desert Pines is situated 15 minutes by car from the Strip and five minutes from downtown's Fremont Street Experience.

The brainchild of Nevada real estate developer Bill Walters, the project is the result of a public-private partnership between the city of Las Vegas and the Walters Group.

The underlying aim of Desert Pines is to offer local residents and out-of-town guests an exceptional private-club-like golf experience at a reasonable daily-fee rate, and help spur new growth in an economically depressed section of the community.

The property, which is situated on a 96-acre parcel of land, encompasses a 6,800-yard, par-71 course; a full-service clubhouse, and a world class practice facility.

The 18-hole course was created by Dye Designs International, which sought to develop a unique park-like oasis for players and offer an environment unlike any other in southern Nevada.

Players will find themselves in an atmosphere boasting more than 3,000 mature pine trees (many of them more than 35 feet tall), beds of thatched pine needles, flower gardens, lakes and hand-cut stones used to frame the championship tees and shorelines.

Additionally, the development of Desert Pines has resulted in an increased presence of wildlife in the area, according to the property.

Enhancing the golf experience are birds such as roadrunners, sandpipers, doves as well as waterfowl.

Rounding out the high-end offerings at Desert Pines is a 21,000-square-foot clubhouse offering all of the amenities golfers would expect from a world class private club, the property said.

The facility features a shoe-steward area, day-use lockers for all players, a full-service bar and restaurant, a separate banquet facility that accommodates up to 165 people, and a climate-controlled patio area seating 80 patrons.

The clubhouse's bar has a collection of golf memorabilia, a complete golf library, videos of major championships and Shell's Wonderful World of Golf.

The recent addition of a state-of-the-art practice facility has further augmented the golf offerings at Desert Pines.

The practice facility, called Desert Pines Golf Center, opened Feb. 4.

Stretching over 10 acres, the property features a two-tiered tee complex, a fully automated ball delivery and teeing system, a covered and lighted driving range, two lesson tees, two custom club-fittings centers exclusive to Callaway golf equipment and food and beverage service.

A highlight of the facility is its driving range, which features five target greens resembling some of the most celebrated par-three holes in the U.S.

Dye Designs International patterned the greens to resemble the 17th holes at TPC Sawgrass, Pinehurst No. 2, Harbor Town Golf Links, Pebble Beach and Plum Creek courses.

Another feature of the practice facility is its 20,000-square-foot tee complex, which contains 58 tee stations averaging 300 square feet each.

Amenities at the tee stations include individual climate-control systems that can be adjusted by players, and a private seating area, where breakfast, lunch or light snacks can be enjoyed.

For players looking to improve their game, Desert Pines Golf Center also offers a top-of-the-line learning center led by one of the most experienced teams of PGA golf instructors.

The teaching staff is headed by Claude Harmon III, son of Butch Harmon, who coaches Tiger Woods.

Each level of the tee complex contains a teaching facility where PGA teaching professionals provide lessons.

The teaching centers are fully automated with learning aids such as video swing analysis, Golf-Tech and A-Star teaching equipment.

Daily golf rates at Desert Pines start at $125 per person, including green fee, a cart, a bag tag, a yardage book, range balls and a day locker.

As part of the property's commitment to the local community, Clark County residents receive preferred tee times and substantial discounts on golf rates.
