KOHALA -- Special rates and events are in place for the reopening of Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows.

The hotel will hold its ninth annual Turtle Independence Day (normally July 4) on Aug. 9.

Young Hawaiian green sea turtles, born in its saltwater ponds, are tagged and released into the ocean.

The event, which celebrates the endangered species, will include entertainment, children's activities, educational displays and a 10K run.

The hotel's eighth annual Cuisines of the Sun food and wine festival (also normally held in July) will be held from Aug. 23 to 27.

This year's focus will be on spices, with vintners and visiting chefs from the mainland and Hawaii participating in the celebration, which will include wine tastings, cooking demonstrations and classes.

A Cuisines package, including four nights' accommodations and participation in 11 activities and events, is priced at $1,295 per person, double.

Summer rates are in effect from reopening through September.

There is a $250 run-of-the-house rate, which applies to the first four room categories, mountainview through oceanview units (rack rates start at $275 for mountainview).

Two other special rates are $360 for deluxe oceanview (which is normally $450) and $410 for oceanfront (normally $490).

The hotel also will introduce golf specials for the reopening and will hold its children's program from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30 ($25 per day, per child).
