Discovery Cove slates agent pay

ORLANDO -- Agents can earn commissions on sales to the Discovery Cove theme park as long as they book through selected wholesalers and hotels, according to Scott Rose, the park's director of marketing.

U.S. wholesalers include Gogo Worldwide Vacations, Kingdom Vacations and Travel Impressions.

In 2001, operators to be added include Mark Travel Corp.; MLT Vacations, and Trans Global, he said.

Orlando hotels with in-house packages featuring Discovery Cove are AmeriSuites Convention Center, Comfort Suites Orlando, Holiday Inn & Suites, Marriott's Orlando World Center, Park Corniche, Ramada Resort, Renaissance Orlando and Sheraton World.

In addition to swimming with the dolphins, Discovery Cove visitors can mingle with some exotic fish in a coral reef. Discovery Cove is located next to its sister attraction -- SeaWorld Adventure Park.

The park, which features a swim with dolphins program, will receive 20% of its 2001 business from agents and other travel industry concerns, according to Rose.

Admission is $189.74, including parking; swimming with the dolphins; all snorkeling and beach gear; towels; a personal locker, and lunch.

It also includes a weeklong pass to SeaWorld Adventure Park for seven consecutive days after the visit to Discovery Cove, the spokesman said.

A second plan does not include the dolphin swim but has the other amenities. The cost of that plan is $94.34.

The latter plan is also for children ages 3 to 5 who cannot participate in the dolphin swim. Children ages 2 and younger are admitted free.

Agents can visit Discovery Cove through Feb. 28 for reduced rates.

The prices are $79 for the inclusive plan and $59 without the dolphin swim.

Discovery Cove limits daily attendance to 1,000 people.

In addition to swimming and playing with dolphins, guests can explore the ocean world by snorkeling with colorful fish, wading with rays and feeding exotic birds.

The park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The park's creation stemmed from SeaWorld's various dolphin-interactive programs.

"People who participated in those programs suggested we build this type of park," a park spokesman said.

The spokesman said groups can be accommodated, but their numbers would have to fit with the overall limit on park attendees. There are no group discounts.
