LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -Because of "fallout," there are some rooms
at Walt Disney World around New Year's Eve, according to Randy
Garfield, president of the Walt Disney Travel Co. and senior vice
president of sales and travel operations for Walt Disney
The common perception is that Disney World is sold out, he
"But remember that some of these people have been on the books
for 15 years. We started accepting millennium reservations in the
1980s," he said during a press briefing at Disney World's
millennium kick-off here.
Garfield estimated that the fallout was no more than 5% or 6%,
which means some rooms could be available. Disney's occupancy rate
in recent years has tended to level out throughout the year.
"There are still some time periods after Thanksgiving and before
Christmas that are slower than other times," he said, but various
special events have also helped bring occupancies up all year
"Our occupancy even in a nonmillennium year is higher than any
other destination," he said.
Garfield predicted another "blast" of publicity around New
Year's focusing on the various Disney events, which in turn should
give travel agents a boost towards next year's bookings.
