Dive resort opens on Cayman's Boatswains Bay

GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman -- Add 20 new rooms, suites and villas to the lodging inventory roster on Grand Cayman.

The island's newest dive property debuted this winter on the northwest shore of Boatswains Bay, removed from the congestion of Seven Mile Beach.

In architectural style, Cobalt Coast Resort & Suites resembles a Caribbean Great House with gabled roofs, wide wood-trimmed balconies and airy interiors, said Arie Barendrecht, managing director.

"We cater to those who want an intimate location in a boutique property with a boat dock and a full-service on-site dive center," he said.

Although a few guest rooms are available, the majority of the resort's inventory is one- or two-bedroom suites with a separate living room, sleep sofa, wet bar and ocean views.

Two two-bedroom garden villas have fully equipped kitchens.

All rooms are air conditioned with cable TV, a refrigerator, a coffeemaker, in-room safe and a direct-dial telephone with data port.

Other facilities include Duppies bar and restaurant, sundeck, gift shop, pool, Jacuzzi and a range of water sports.

Commissionable rates through Dec. 20 range from $135 per room, per night, double, in a gardenview room to $275 for a two-bedroom villa.

Daily breakfast is included in the rates.

Barendrecht said that dive certification packages offered by Divetech are available on the four- and seven-night dive plans.

Daily boat dives depart from Cobalt's dock or nearby locations at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Shore diving takes place from the 120-foot dock as well.

Several times a week divers visit the North Wall and then Stingray City.

Guided night dives with lights, weights, tanks and a guide take place on Tuesday and Friday evenings from shore at Turtle Reef next to the Turtle Farm or at Cobalt Coast

Prices on the seven-night dive plan start at $1,149 per person, double, for divers, $699 for nondivers in a garden-view room and go up to $$1,728 and $1,278, respectively, in a two-bedroom suite or villa.

The four-night dive plan ranges from $642 and $417 to $973 and $748, respectively; all rates are valid through Dec. 20.

Packages cover accommodations, transfers, daily breakfast, sunset cocktail, daily two-tank boat dive with equipment, unlimited shore diving, taxes and service charges.
