Diving Packages Explore the Deep Sea in Barbados

BRIDGETOWN -- Several Barbados hotels are offering value-added dive packages through mid-December.

Dive Barbados arranges dive packages through the Bougainvillea Beach Resort, the Golden Palm Hotel and the High Tide Water Sports dive shop.

Packages are available through October and range from four- to six-nights. Included are six to 10 dives, beachfront accommodations, roundtrip airport transfers, all taxes and service charges and transportation to and from the dive shop. The accommodations are located near the local nightlife. Rates begin at $419 per person, double.

Dive Barbados said the island has clear, warm coastal waters with reefs, shipwrecks and abundant marine life. Both experienced divers and beginners can explore the barrier reefs, located within two miles of the shore, which have large coral heads inhabited by hawksbill turtles and thousands of fish. The smaller fringes and patching reefs are home to many forms of plant life, sea horses, frog fish and giant sand eels.

With more than 200 wrecks reported off the coast of Barbados, the adventurous diver can delve into history. The most famous wreck, the Stavronikita, has become an artificial reef for marine life. Visitors to the Folkestone Marine Park and Museum can visit the ship, snorkel at the in-shore reef in the park's Recreational Zone and visit the Museum's aquarium and photography exhibition. Carlisle Bay also offers many shipwrecks to explore.

The Dive Shop is offering dive packages with two hotels: the Cacrabank Beach Apartment Hotel and the inclusive Island Inn Hotel. Through Dec. 15, seven-night stays start at $469 per person, double, at Cacrabank and $909 per person, double, at the Island Inn.

The packages include airport transfers in Barbados, unlimited day boat dives, one night dive, equipment and a farewell party.

A contest for a free trip to Barbados is being offered. The trip includes a champagne flight, accommodations, two daily boat dives with all necessary equipment and free use of an underwater camera for a day. Further contest information is available on The Dive Shop Website: www.caribnet.net/dive_shop.
