Dominican Republic appoints new tourism minister

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- The republic's tourism ministry appointed Rafael Subervi minister of tourism. Subervi, the former minister of interior and police, replaced Ramon Alfredo Bordas, who was made director of export promotions.

Appointed deputy ministers of tourism were Sonia Jimenez, Ana Rita Tejeda, Edgar Felix and Cesar Cabrera. In other news, the government signed into law a bill stating that all money collected via airport taxes and revenues from all purchased $10 tourist cards will go to the tourism department.

Also in the works is a campaign to "raise public awareness of the safety of vacationing in the Dominican Republic," according to a spokeswoman. The campaign aims to capture a share of the tourists who canceled plans to travel to the Middle East and Asia, she said.
