NORTH MIAMI -- Eagle Maritime Inc., based here, offers
15%-commissionable charter trips of two hours to two weeks on the
68-foot schooner Eagle and other vessels.
The longer trips include the six-night Dry Tortugas Adventure
Week sailing out of downtown Key West, June through August.
The cruise is priced at $525 per person, based on a minimum of 10
passengers but no more than 13. Included are food, captain and
crew. The 13th passenger is free when 12 are paid for.
The schooner Eagle has three cabins and is typically chartered
by three couples, families, youth groups, adventure-minded groups
or corporate concerns, according to Capt. Mike Painter, who owns
The Dry Tortugas sail allows time each day for snorkeling around
coral reefs. The seven-island chain is about 70 miles west of Key
West and is both a national park and a marine sanctuary.
The first day, after boarding in Key West, for example, there is
snorkeling at Sand Key; the boat anchors at Boca Grande Key. The
second day calls for snorkeling at Rebecca Shoal, trolling for
grouper and mahi mahi, and a tour of pre-Civil War Fort Jefferson
on Garden Key. Other points visited are Garden Key, Bird Island
(where there is a barbecue), Loggerhead Key, Cosgrove Shoal and, on
the final night, a choice of Pelican Shoal or Key West.
Agents can book pre- and post stays in Key West in conjunction
with the sailing. Capt. Mike Painter heads Eagle Maritime, which
has been offering charters since 1994.
Another six-night sailing is from Miami to Bimini and is priced
the same as the Key West-Dry Tortugas cruises. Day trips around
Greater Miami, the shortest option, can take up to 40 passengers.
In Miami, the Eagle is boarded at the Biscayne Bay Marriott Marina,
1633 N. Bayshore Drive.
