Earthquake rocks Turkey

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- The airport here remained open and city hotels were unaffected following a major earthquake centered 65 miles east of here on Aug. 17, the Turkish Tourist Office in New York said.

The quake shook the city and caused fragile buildings in poorer districts to collapse, but historic monuments such as the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace showed no visible damage, tourism officials said. Hundreds were reported killed and many more wounded in Turkey.
