Eden Roc gets $24M face-lift

MIAMI BEACH -- A $24 million renovation is under way at the Eden Roc Resort & Spa involving the main lobby, a restaurant, all rooms and the spa.

"We endeavored to bring back the original splendor of this great classic hotel," said Julio Grabiel of Spillis Candela & Partners, the Coral Gables, Fla. -based design company.

The resort also is taking steps to preserve the fragile environment of nesting sea turtles. All existing windows, for example, are being replaced with "turtle glass" to reduce the glare from lights. The glare can interfere with the turtles' nesting habits.

Renovations are to continue through October with the second and final phase of the work set to take place next summer. Thus, work will not occur during the peak season, a spokeswoman said.

The Eden Roc was originally designed and built in 1956 with its design and architecture reflecting what some see as the heyday of Miami Beach. The New York-based Blackacre Capital Group, in partnership with Denver-based Destination Hotels & Resorts, bought the property in April 1998.
