Eight soldiers perish in failed Fiji coup

SUVA, Fiji -- Areas of the Fijian island outside Suva were safe and flights out of the international airport at Nadi were operating normally, the Fiji Visitors Bureau said, after eight soldiers were killed here during an attempted takeover by a breakaway faction of the Fiji military.

According to the visitors bureau and international press reports, five soldiers loyal to the jailed leader of a coup in May were killed in the attempted takeover of the Fiji military headquarters.

Three soldiers loyal to the government were killed. Nine of those attempting the takeover escaped, and 11 were captured.
