TEL AVIV -- Israel's flag carrier, El Al, initialed a
cooperative service agreement with American Airlines to create a
reciprocal code-sharing program.
American agreed to place its AA designator code on El Al
nonstop, roundtrip flights from Chicago and Newark, N.J., to Tel
Aviv, beginning Nov. 1.
Selected American Chicago-Los Angeles or Chicago-Miami flights
as well as others between Newark and either Chicago, Los Angeles or
Miami will bear El Al's code, LY.
The new connecting flights will offer preissued boarding passes,
and both carriers will offer frequent-flyer miles.
El Al also upgraded other marketing arrangements and
The airline signed agreements with Minneapolis-based Radisson
Hotels Worldwide and Avis Rent A Car for frequent-traveler
Hotel stays will earn 20 points; car rentals will earn 20 if
outside Israel, 30 within the country, toward the carrier's Matmid,
Loyal Traveler or Buy/Fly clubs.
El Al offers American Express card users discounts on side
trips, accommodations and car rentals.
In Israel, El Al opened its fourth early check-in facility.
The new location is at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport, Terminal
2, and is open daily from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.; it is closed on the
Jewish Sabbath and holidays.
Other early check-in services in Israel are available in Tel
Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa. Similar facilities in the U.S. are in
Brooklyn, N.Y., and in Los Angeles.
Ticketholders can check their baggage and receive their boarding
cards the night before departure. Passengers doing so are required
to arrive at the airport only 75 minutes prior to departure.
El Al also announced that its new president is Joel Feldschuh,
former chairman of the board of Israel's Modiin Housing Development
Co. and an Israeli air force officer and pilot.
