DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is putting the finishing touches on its first property outside of North America and the Caribbean, the Fairmont Dubai, which is set to open Feb. 2.

The Fairmont Dubai occupies a portion of a 34-story building constructed in the shape of a barajeel, an Arabic windtower. It features 394 rooms, including 128 suites, and is located in the city's business district.

The building, which also contains apartments and office space, is connected to the Dubai World Trade Center by a pedestrian bridge.

The hotel is a collaboration between Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, a leading figure in the United Arab Emirates, and Fairmont.

The two parties plan to develop Fairmont hotels elsewhere in the Middle East and in other locations. The Dubai property is the first in the partnership.

Toronto-based Fairmont has 38 hotels in North America and the Caribbean, including the Plaza in New York, the Fairmont San Francisco and the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada.

The Fairmont Dubai, which will feature 394 rooms, is slated to open Feb. 2. Management said it believes the hotel's amenities will make it a hit with business travelers. Videoconferencing facilities and DSL links are available as well as a spa and a fitness center.

Dining options at the Fairmont Dubai include the Exchange Grill, Bar & Cigar Lounge; the Cascades (open all day), and the Spectrum on One, a 297-seat restaurant that has seven kitchens and offers a variety of cuisines.

The Fairmont recently played host to a group of 122 travel professionals and agents.

The hotel is offering a rate of $95 per night for agent bookings during its first month of operation. Commission is 10%.

The promotional rate for consumers is $110 per night.

Fairmont appointed Michael Kaile general manager and vice president of the property.

Kaile, who joined the Canadian hotelier in 1991, was previously regional vice president and general manager of the Fairmont Hamilton Princess in Bermuda.

Other appointments included Stephen Banks as regional sales and marketing director and Kent Cooper as director of sales.

Banks was previously with Ritz-Carlton's Middle East operations, and Cooper served at New York's Plaza.
