Far Horizons tour spotlights Mayan art history

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Far Horizons Archaeological & Cultural Trips is offering art history buffs an in-depth exploration of the ancient Mayan civilization in Mexico.

Mayan site of PalenqueParticipants in the firm's eight-day tour spotlighting the ruins of Palenque and Chichen Itza will be guests of the archaeological teams excavating the sites and have a chance to enter areas normally closed to the public.

The program, called the Art of Palenque and Chichen Itza, will raise funds for the Palenque Cross Group Project, which has spearheaded excavations at the site during the past two years.

The program will be led by Dr. Merle Greene Robertson, one of the directors of the Cross Group Project and an art historian who has spent more than 35 years studying and recording the art of the Maya.

The tour features four days hosted by the archaeological team at Palenque, where highlights will include a visit to the Palenque project laboratory and a dinner with the Cross Group archaeologists.

At Palenque, participants will be able view frescoes, stucco friezes and hieroglyphic scripts. The itinerary also includes visits to two other archaeological sites: Dzibilchaltun, a Mayan city that was occupied for more than 2,000 years, and Chichen Itza, the most popular site in the Yucatan region.

At Chichen Itza, participants will view features of the Temple of the Big Tables, which is closed to the general public, and explore buildings and caverns in Old Chichen, an area seldom visited by travelers.

The Chichen Itza portion of the trip also includes a dinner party at the colonial hacienda of the daughter of a renowned Mayanist.

Each client on the trip will receive a signed volume of Robertson's book "Maya Sculpture From the Southern Lowlands, Highlands and Pacific Piedmont."

The program is limited to 14 participants.

The cost is $3,595 per person, double, including roundtrip air fare from Dallas, domestic air fare in Mexico, hotel rooms, most meals, entry fees and ground transportation. The rate does not include a tax-free donation of $175 per person.

The program is commissionable to agents at 10%.
