Firm fills demand for single-country jaunts

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Single country vacations are the wave of the future in the escorted tour market, according to Collette Tours, based here.

The firm gives clients "a chance to touch and taste a country's essence in a more interactive way than ever before," said Manuel Paulo, product manager for Europe.

One example of this approach is Collette's eight-night Sights & Sounds of Switzerland program, which is based in Lucerne and makes day visits to Brienz, Interlaken, Grindewald and Bern, as well as excursions to Vaduz, Liechtenstein, and Lindau, Germany.

Clients receive lessons in woodcarving, glassblowing, alphorn making and cheese and chocolate processing. Another highlight is a ride to Mount Titlilous on a rotating cable car, a journey not made on most tours, Paulo said, because of time constraints. The program is priced from $1,099, double, land only.

Also new this year is the eight-night Hidden Austria, which is featured in Collette's Austrian Airlines Vacation brochure and its own tour catalog. Along with two nights in Vienna, the tour spends the duration in Linz, a well preserved city of impressive medieval architecture that is rarely the focus of escorted tour companies. Several excursions are part of the itinerary. The program is priced from $1,069, double.
