Firm focuses on booking lesser-known properties

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Half the fun of traveling to Italy can be staying in small, out-of-the-way hotels, but scouting them out can be a thankless task for travel agents, particularly if the proprietors don't speak English or, worse, don't pay commissions.

Enter Travel-Italy.com, a company devoted to selling some 150 hotels throughout Italy, many of which would likely not otherwise cross the radar screen of the average agent.

The company, based here and founded in 1992, represents properties in a range of classifications, including two- and three-star hotels.

New this year are hotels in Sicily in such popular destinations as Agrigento and Prizzi.

Fans of HBO's "The Sopranos" can visit the village of Soprana from properties in nearby Palermo and Enna, for example.

To promote its new Sicily properties, the company is offering a 10% discount on bookings to that region made through June 30.

Family-friendly hotels -- many with rooms large enough to accommodate a family of four -- also are available through Travel-Italy.com.

Properties are available throughout Italy, including near such primary locations as the Spanish Steps in Rome and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
