SAN SEBASTIAN, Mexico -- My daylong excursion to San Sebastian began at 9:30 a.m. at the private Aerotron Hangar at Puerto Vallarta's Gustavo Diaz Ordaz Airport.

I had booked my trip through ShoreTrips, an online operator offering more than 1,000 commissionable excursions throughout the Caribbean and the Mexican resort areas of Cancun, Cozumel and Puerto Vallarta.

The firm's forte is the unusual outing that goes well beyond the standard expected itinerary.

Partners Barry Karp and Julie Ansfield help agents plan day trips for land-based travelers who want more than just an island tour or for cruise passengers who want to maximize their shore time.

The operator on my San Sebastian trip was Vallarta Adventure, a young firm with three air tours, seven water-based adventures and an off-road trek into the Mexican outback.

The San Sebastian trip was priced at $140.

ShoreTrips' commission structure is $5 per client, per tour, for excursions priced up to $99; $10 for tours priced between $100 and $199; and $20 for tours priced from $200 to $299. The commission increases in $10 increments for each $100 price bracket.
