Fla. Passes Tort-Reform Legislation

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Florida House and Senate passed bills on tort reform that affect the rights of visitors to sue hotels, tourist attractions, restaurants, beaches, shopping malls and parking lots for negligence.

The House bill (HB-3875) gives business owners who implement certain security measures the presumption that they have provided adequate security against crimes committed by nonemployees. The Senate bill (SB-874) is less sweeping in that provision.

The Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers said it opposes the House version.

Both pieces of legislation went to conference committee.
