Fla. arrivals slip 4%; first decline in decade

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Preliminary visitor arrival figures for 2001 vs. 2000 reported by Visit Florida indicate a reversal in what had been a decade of steady annual increases.

Florida posted a loss of 4% in arrivals when it welcomed an estimated 69.8 million guests. Of course, the largest decline was posted during the fourth quarter, following the terrorist attacks.

Some 14 million visitors came to the state during that quarter, a decrease of 19% vs. the same quarter of 2000.
