PONTE VEDRA BEACH--Renovation on 160 villas at the Marriott at
Sawgrass here is expected to be completed by the end of the year,
according to a spokesperson.
These villas will have full kitchens and are designed for
families and others who have booked extended stays.
In keeping with the resort's informal sports theme, guest rooms
have a more relaxed decor. Egret desk lamps have three-way light
switches to help provide a user-friendly setting.
The renovation follows several upgrades of the 4,800-acre,
348-room resort's facilities, according to Chris Bracken, director
Although the Sawgrass Marriott has obvious appeal to families,
meetings are responsible for up to 75% of its business, Bracken
said. The Sawgrass Marriott has 40,000 square feet of meeting
space. An expansion will add another 8,000 square feet this year.
Groups of up to 700 can be housed at the property, with discounts
of up to 20% available, according to Bracken.
Another recent renovation was made at the Cabana Club, which
guests use for ocean access. A $1 million upgrade included a
face-lift of a more formal Oceanview restaurant and the casual Sea
Porch. One of the hotel's most memorable features is the
70-foot-high atrium lobby and an outside waterfall.
The Sawgrass Marriott offers guests 99 holes of golf, featuring
the scenic yet very difficult 17th hole of the Tournament Players
Club (TPC) course. Each year divers retrieve 100,000 golf balls
from the waters surrounding it.
Although guests can book tee times at the TPC, the resort's
Valley course is well-maintained and less crowded. The Valley has
water on each hole.
The resort also features 19 tennis courts with four different
surfaces, including grass courts. Guests pay $15 to play all day if
The resort also has horseback riding on the beach, children's
programs, three pools and 2.5 miles of beach. Many guests visit
nearby St. Augustine and the Castillo de San Marcos National
Monument, which overlooks Matanzas Bay.
