Floyd storms the Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas -- Hurricane Floyd pounded the Bahamas and forced evacuations from hotels throughout the island chain.

Hotels have activated their hurricane programs. Under the Bahamas Hotel Association Hurricane Policy, visitors whose vacations are delayed by a hurricane can apply their deposits to a future stay or claim a full refund. Those who are forced to stay on the island are offered "all possible courtesies" and will "be charged the lowest possible rate."

Sandals said that its hurricane guarantee for guests inconvenienced by the powerful storm would amount to more than $1.5 million at the Nassau property alone.

Cruise lines, meanwhile, were busy moving ships. Affected vessels were Royal Caribbean's Sovereign of the Seas, Carnival's Fantasy and Destiny, and Disney's Magic and Wonder.

Virtually all flights to South Florida were canceled. Many resorts in the southern part of the state were planning to close until the storm passed. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and barrier island vacation spots also closed down.
