PARIS -- The anniversary of D-Day this June will translate into free hotel stays for some 300 select World War II veterans from the 14 Allied Nations involved in the pivotal battle.

Thirty-one hotels in Paris have offered to provide up to three nights' accommodations for the veterans and one guest free of charge from June 4 to 7when the D-Day offensive, which took place 60 years ago, will be commemorated.

Furthermore, the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau will also oversee several other initiatives connected with the welcome of an additional 5,000 veterans with complimentary accommodations, tours and information.

The French Ministry of Tourism said the D-Day event, along with the free-stay offer, is designed to illustrate "the gratitude the capital has for its liberation in 1944, an event that took place as a direct result of the courage of these men displayed during the Normandy landings."
